About Us

Mosaic Educational Ltd is a social enterprise education consultancy company, formed in 2003. It aims to promote effective parental involvement through dissemination of high quality information and resources for schools, parents and educational organisations.

Mosaic Educational services include education research and evaluations, support and advice for local education authorities and schools on developing effective parental involvement strategies and information and resources for more effective management of volunteers in schools.

Consultants
The four consultants at Mosaic have extensive experience and knowledge of working with local education authorities, schools, parents, governors and other educational/academic organisations. As such they are well-placed to offer a flexible service to local authorities to promote and structure parental involvement throughout local schools and children’s centres. Most recently, training and support have been given to Essex and Devon local authorities.

Dr Jean de Rijke
Jean's long-standing interest in home-school-community partnerships led to the development of the Effective Partnerships with Parents Toolkit and Strategy for schools. Underpinning her very practical approach to exploring home-school-community relations was her PhD research ‘Citizen Participation and Democratic Involvement: The Case of Parental Involvement in Schools’ in which reveals perceptions and attitudes of parents and teachers that may more generally affect partnership working in schools. She has recently published ‘Volunteering in Schools’ a guide to more effective recruitment and management of volunteers. Jean has four adult children and when they were young she was a long-standing and active member of the local federation of PTAs (PTA@PTD). She has also been a school governor, was the independent chair of the Devon Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership for four years and served on numerous local authority education committees and partnerships in Devon

Drummond Johnstone
Drummond trained as a teacher and worked in three comprehensive schools in Devon, Essex and Hampshire, latterly as a Head of Humanities Faculty. For the past 14 years he has run his own educational publishing company, Southgate Publishers, which specialises in practical materials for Primary teachers. Southgate also publishes for a number of charities including the Campaign for Learning and the Learning through Landscapes Trust.

Drummond formed the Devon Federation of PTAs in 1988 and served as chairman for several years. He has also served as a governor in a very large community college and a small rural primary school. Drummond has two adult children.

Steve Keable
During his career Steve has worked for children, young people, parents and families. He trained as a youth worker and teacher. His current work is strategy and policy for Devon County Council, Children and Young People's Service where he is the Infrastructure Manager. Much of Steve's work involves partnership initiatives with a wide range of organisations in all sectors - voluntary, public and private. He is the Co-Chair of Funding South West and the Funders Forum. Committed to involvement and participation, Steve has helped Mosaic Educational pioneer and develop the EPPa programme as one of the most effective ways of involving parents in schools and their communities.

Simon Patton
Simon has a comprehensive background in many aspects of education and he has a particular passion for the role parents play in it. He has been a Teacher, Primary School headteacher, a registered inspector of schools, an educational consultant and is currently working with the world-leading National College for School Leadership as part of their e learning team. In the build-up to the millennium, Simon worked with TESCO to develop their flagship project Schoolnet2000. Subsequently Simon joined the team setting up the National College for School Leadership's innovative online community for headteachers known as 'Talking Heads', working out of the former ULTRALAB ICT learning, research and technology centre. He has had input into a range of national educational developments for example serving as the National President of ASPECT formerly National Association of Educational Inspectors, Advisers and Consultants (NAEIAC). Simon was a founding member of Plymouth, Torbay & Devon Federation of Parent Teacher Associations (PTA@PTD), and has played a key role in the development of the Effective Partnership with Parents initiative. Simon also has four sons - two in their early twenties, a four and one year old - so he has particular reason to continue his passion for parental involvement.

Effective Partnerships with Parents
Supporting schools to create and sustain effective partnerships with parents and the community is central to the ethos of Mosaic. To this end the directors together with other colleagues undertook an 8-year action research programme to explore how effective partnerships evolved and what made them successful. This project was designed and managed by Jean de Rijke, and resulted in the development and publication of the EPPa Toolkit and Strategy In 2005. The Toolkit is now used in local authorities across the UK. Funding for the early development came from various sources, including the DfES, LSC, Devon, Plymouth and Torbay LEAs as well as the National Confederation of Parent Teacher Associations. An independent evaluation was undertaken by the CSER at the College of St Mark and St John in Plymouth as the materials developed in 2002. Following the success of EPPa in the southwest (which demonstrated that parents were competent and confident to lead learning projects with schools), the DfES invited Mosaic Educational in 2005 to undertake a further one-year trial of the materials in London schools.
